Medication and nutrient interactions happen when medicines affect how the body absorbs, uses, or breaks down nutrients, or when certain nutrients change how a medicine works. Some interactions can be dangerous. Your pharmacist will tell you if you need to avoid certain foods or supplements.

Medications can also affect your gastrointestinal system and cause nausea, heartburn, loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation. Some medications are better tolerated if taken with food while others must be taken on an empty stomach. Follow the instructions that come with your medication.
